The Treaty Tribes Coalition has been the proud owner operator of the Te Matau A Maui Annual Maori Fisheries Conference for 5 consecutive years.
The 2011 conference will hail the rebranding and launch of this eagerly anticipated event as the MAUI National Maori Fisheries Conference. Treaty Tribes Coalition intends to build on the success of the last 5 years by forging ahead with the intended strategy of, “…taking this event to the people.”
Māori exercise effective control of approximately 50% of the entire industry which now has an estimated resource value of NZ$3.97 billion. The significance of this conference and its ongoing success is a clear indicator that Māori are successful key players in the New Zealand seafood industry.
This year’s conference theme is “Te iti me te rahi – sea shells to Sea Lords”. The theme is based on a broad acknowledgement that, post settlement, Maori have moved from a status of Kaitieki or customary caretakers of the sea to Sea Lords, owners of major commercial fisheries assets. All attendees will be asked to acknowledge the past, accept the present and turn their focus to the future and the business opportunities that will guarantee continued success for Maori in business within the fisheries sector.
Again a full cross section of the seafood industry will be represented as we present concepts and opportunities that meet the quintuple bottom line for Maori Fisheries - environmentally sustainable, culturally and socially sustainable, economically sustainable and politically sustainable.
The conference programme is still in the process of being finalised. A full and final copy will be circulated to all VIPs, Guest Speakers and registered conference delegates when it has been completed.
A wide range of entertainment has been secured for this years event with the return of the very talented Eteuati Ete & Tofinga Fepulea'i, otherwise known as "The Laughing Samoans".Mike King - the consummate professional has been booked to inspire and feed you all! Did you hear that - he is going to COOK for you! Have we got your attention?
Mr King has been busy turning himself upside down and inside out making changes to address what others might deem to be insurmountable heatlh challenges. He has since turned these challenges into what we can only describe as highly successful M.I.B; "Maori Inspired Brilliance". Register to attend and bypass the gossip to get the full story. See you there!
To achieve this strategy the MAUI National Maori Fisheries Conference 2011 is now on the move. In following Tama-nui te Ra (Tama-nui the Sun) from east to west, the next consecutive member Iwi of Treaty Tribes Coalition Limited is Ngai Tahu.
It was intended that this event would be held in Christchurch; however the recent earthquake has required the relocation of this event to Nelson. The chosen venue is the Rutherford Hotel, Trafalgar Square, Nelson. This event is scheduled to begin on Sunday 22nd May and end at approximately 3:30pm on Tuesday 24th May 2011.
Treaty Tribes Coalition Limited is confident that this event will be fully subscribed prior to conference commencement. This will include governance and management of every significant seafood business in the country.
Registrations open Wednesday 23rd March 2011. All representatives are urged to REGISTER quickly to secure their place to attend this absolutely fantastic event and make full use of the networking opportunities it offers.
Each year these conferences continue the trend of being fully subscribed with participants representing Iwi and industry players both throughout Aotearoa and internationally. Lee Group, who operates out of Europe, USA and Asia were welcomed as Primary Sponsors. In keeping with previous successful conferences, the messages from our international speakers reinforced a line up of inspiring guest speakers and the message “kotahitanga – Off Shore For Sure. Let’s make more not take more.”
The 2009 conference was designed to challenge and provoke thought, discussions and strategies to take control of issues Maori face domestically, and to take heed of the global economy, and to explore and pursue opportunities locally and internationally. The emphasis being on active participation and engagement is the point of difference between being in control or being controlled.
The 2008 conference built on the success of the 2007 conference with an equally impressive line-up of speakers and topics, coupled with both structured and informal opportunities for discussion, debate and networking. The 2008 programme focused on the quintuple bottom line for Maori fisheries; it must be environmentally sustainable, culturally and socially sustainable and politically sustainable.
Kanohi Ki Te Kanohi – Face to Face Conference 2007. Key issues and themes included Shared Fisheries, the growing importance of aquaculture and its potential, kotahitanga amongst Iwi Māori, information sharing and globalisation: face to face, facing off and facing up to some tough challenges.
The inaugural Te Mātau a Māui Conference in 2006 was the first Maori Fisheries Conference convened by iwi, for iwi. The theme of “Maintaining the Mauri of Tangaroa” – Maori operate across all activities of Tangaroa including Conservation, Recreation, Customary, Commercial and Aquaculture, was well received. Key issues and themes included, The Maori Physchology of Fishing, Foreshore and Seabed, A Maori Fishing Brand.
